Abstract

962,679. Ultrasonic inspection devices. HOESCH A.G. March 27, 1962 [March 30, 1961], No. 11715/62. Heading H4D. In apparatus detecting flaws in a sheet metal strip 1, moving perpendicular to the paper, by ultrasonic pulse echo means, errors, due to the absorbtion of the pulses being changed other than by flaws, e.g. by variations in the thickness of the sheet on coupling medium 2, or by changes in the surface of the sheet, are overcome by feeding the output of the receiver 6, to two indicating means 7 and 8, the first of which 7, linearly amplifies the entire received pulse and displays it on a recorder (top trace), with flaws shown as large dips and the errors by variations in the top of the pulse, whilst the second indicating means 8, clips the echo pulse to remove the variations and displays the flaw dips with increased amplification (bottom trace). The erroneous variations of the received pulse may be used to control, by servo means, the power of the pulse emitter 5 so as to keep the scale of the recording of means 8 constant. Receiver 6 may be replaced by two separate receivers individually feeding the two indicating means.
