Abstract

962,513. Converter chimneys; waste heat steam boilers; removing waste products in industrial processes. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Nov. 9, 1962 [Dec. 7, 1961], No. 42382/62. Headings F4A, F4J and F4X. A hood arrangement, e.g. for a steel converter, comprises a hood 22 lined on its inner surface with steam-generating tubes forming a steam generator system, and having its open end disposed above a converter to receive waste gases, said hood including a removable panel 46, the stem tubes 44a lining the panel being connected into the steam generator system in such a way as to be readily removable with the panel. As shown, feed water from drum 28 flows down pipe 32 and is positively circulated by pump 34 to distribution header 38. The water is then piped to inlet headers 40, 50 supplying the main hood tubes 44 via conduits 42, 42a respectively and to inlet header 48 supplying the panel tubes 44a via conduit 51. Water and steam formed in tubes 44, 44a is collected in outlet headers 52, 49 respectively from whence it is returned to drum 28 via conduits 54 and 54a respectively. Adjacent tubes 44 are welded together throughout their lengths to provide a rigid and generally fluidtight structure. Panel tubes 44a are similarly welded and their inlet and outlet headers 48, 49 are mounted on the panel 46 and are detachably connected by couplings 58 (Fig. 2, not shown), to feed and return conduits 51 and 54a. Valves are provided on either side of the couplings to prevent drainage of the tubes 44a or of the conduits 51, 54a when the panel is removed. A fan 88 supplies air to the hood at zone 26 via distribution duct 86, and discharges it tangentially into the hood via nozzles 92 (Fig. 3, not shown). Fuel may also be introduced into the hood at zone 26 via nozzles 96. A fan 82 sucks the gases from the converter throug hthe hood. In a modification the panel 46 may be pivoted to the hood, flexible feed and return pipes being connected to the inlet and outlet headers (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). The hood is supported on structures 102 and 104 located above the hood to permit downward expansion thereof.
