962,424. Forging; extruding. TEXTRON INDUSTRIES Inc. Dec. 19, 1962, No. 48058/62. Headings B3H and B3P. [Also in Division F2] A headed metal article, such as a cap screw, having a head 16, Fig. 4, with a polygonal socket 20, axially extending wrench engaging serrations 18 and a washer flange 22, is made by forwardly extruding a cold cylindrical workpiece within a die 30, Fig. 6, to form a reduced shank, placing the shank in a die 50, Fig. 7, and applying axial pressure by a punch 58 to form the serrations 62, and whilst still in the die advancing a punch 70, Fig. 8, having a socket forming punch 76 over the head to form the socket and the washer. In die 30, Fig. 6, the workpiece is extruded by punch 42 through a die throat having a definite radius R; an ejector pin 44 is provided. In die 50, Fig. 7, the further extrusion of the shank throat 54 takes place whilst the serrations are being formed. Punch 70 has a serrated cavity 74 which encloses the head during piercing of the socket and upsetting of the flange 72. An ejector pin 80 is provided.
