Abstract

962,367. Distortion measurements. STANDARD TELEPHONE & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 3, 1962 [Aug. 4, 1961], No. 29961/62. Heading G1U. The amplitude-frequency response curve of a FM transmission system is measured by superimposing a test frequency on a sweep frequency and varying the test frequency between 1/20 and “ of the 3-dB bandwidth of the transmission system. The embodiment illustrated is a differential slope measuring set as in Specification 866,257. The sweep frequency #s is selected to lie below the bandwidth of the test system 1. The test frequency #T is deliberately chosen to be sufficiently high that the amplitude-frequency response of the system 1 under test is no longer linear since it is in this region information is obtained as to the causes of distortion. The feature of the invention is to vary the test frequency over the range 1/20 -1/4 of the bandwidth of the test system. This can be done continuously, either manually or automatically, or the frequency can be switched over the range according to a predetermined programme.
