A method of packaging different materials in cartons includes providing a glue lap and a closure flap of a carton blank with indicia representative of the material to be packed in the carton, checking the indicia on the lap, gluing the lap to the body of the blank thus concealing the indicia, checking the indicia on the flap and packing the carton with material in accordance with the said flap indicia. The indicia are in the form of at least one row if a predetermined number of stripes 16 of one or more colours which are checked photoelectronically (see Fig. 1) in known manner to ensure that the number of spaced lines on the lap agrees with the standard code of the material to be packaged. As the cartons pass on a conveyer 10 under the scanning means the number of marks in the different colours are registered on a counter 14 which resets itself after each carton. Where two or more rows of indicia occur on the flap a lap separate scanning means monitor each row. If the coding on the carton does not agree with the standard code resetting does not occur and means are actuated to reject the carton from the apparatus or an alarm or signal is actuated.
