Abstract

962,224. Temperature-responsive actuating- elements. SVENSKA A. B. GASACCUMULATOR. May 3, 1960 [Aug. 28, 1959; Sept. 17, 1959], No. 15493/60. Heading G1D. A thermostat comprises a container 2 filled with a thermally expanding and contracting substance 1 and having one wall formed with a sleeve 18 which protrudes into the substance and is apertured to define a cylinder for guiding a piston 19 located between a yielding region of the substance and a cavity 42 formed inside the sleeve. The material 1 is preferably soft rubber and between it and the piston 19, material having greater wear resisting properties may be arranged (Fig. 4 not shown). Such material may comprise a hard rubber skin, two thin skins with a lubricant between them, or small particles of hard rubber, glass or steel balls. The thermostat shown operates a valve 30 in a hot-water space-heating system. Expansion or contraction of the rubber 1 moves the piston 19 to open or close the valve 30. Pressure in the rubber above a predetermined maximum is relieved by the lifting of a safety piston 16 against the action of a spring 14. Normal pressure in the rubber is maintained by a spring 21. The space 42 within the sleeve 18, the spaces in which the springs 14 and 21 are housed and the space within a tube 25 extending between the valve and the thermostat, are filled with a silicone grease, and these spaces may communicate with one another. The thermostat is set to different temperatures by diminishing or increasing the volume of the rubber container 2 by turning a hand-wheel 8 and consequently moving a piston 3. If the ambient temperature drops unduly causing contraction of the rubber, a spring 4 under the piston 3 acts to maintain a minimum pressure by raising the piston. The cross-sectional shape of the piston 19 may be circular, square or elliptical. In a modification, a cavity may be formed inside the rubber 1. This cavity may be filled with a liquid such as silicone oil and may communicate with a bulb remote from the thermostat. Specifications 962,223 and 962,225 are referred to.
