Abstract

961,908. Needling fibrous batts. CHATHAM MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 4, 1961], No.37225/62. Heading D1R. A needle board for use in a needle loom comprises a body member made from a rigid foam resin and having a desired pattern of holes moulded therein, and a plurality of needles 16 held in the holes of the body member. Two sheets 18, 20 of synthetic plastic, e.g. fiberglass or reinforced epoxy resins, or of metal, e.g. aluminium, are clamped together and then holes 24 are drilled through both sheets. The drilling apparatus may comprise only one drill 22 used with a template or a number of drills 22 arranged in a desired pattern. The sheets 18, 20 are separated and needles 16 are inserted through corresponding holes in the sheets. Each needle 16 has a shank 14, a body 26 having barbs (not shown) thereon. An ear 28a to retain the needle in the board is provided. After insertion of the needles 16 one of the sheets 18, 20 is moved relative to the other either in a plane parallel to the other sheet to orient all the needles parallel to each other or to an angle to the other sheet so that some needles extend at different angles to each other. The sheets 18, 20 are then secured to a frame 30 comprising elements 32 riveted, glued, welded or soldered to the sheets. U-shaped or I- shaped reinforcements may be inserted between the sheets prior to securing to the frame 30. The board is then secured to a clamp 40 of a needle loom which clamp bears against the ears 28. Before securing to the frame 30 the space between the sheets 18, 20 is filled with an expansible resin expanded in position to form a rigid foam resin, the shanks 14 previously having been coated with a silicone lubricant to facilitate replacement thereof. Suitable resins are epoxy resins, e.g. a bisphenol A-epichlorhydrin resin, polyurethane resins and polystyrene resins. In a modification, Fig. 4, the needle board comprises only a rigid foam resin. The sheets 18<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>1</SP>, side members 32<SP>1</SP> and the needles form a mould and the internal surfaces 50, 52 and the needles are coated with silicone lubricant, e. g. polydimethylsiloxane. The needles, the sheets 18<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>1</SP> and the members 32<SP>1</SP> are removed and the needles are reinserted into the foam resin. Dimensions of the needle board are given in the Specification. Specifications 923,762 and 961,909 are referred to.
