961,800. Expansion Joints; universal joints. FEDERAL-MOGUL-BOWER BEARINGS Inc. Dec. 12, 1962, No. 46869/62. Heading F2G. A bellows unit comprises a tubular bellows 16 having affixed at opposite ends thereof tubular members 20, and restraining means internally affixed to the members 20 to limit axial expansion of the bellows and including a pair of interlaced restraining members 22 within the tubular members and bellows, the members 22 having confronting portions that are swivelly engageable within the bellows and rigidly affixed to opposite ones of the tubular members 20; the swivelly engageable portions of the restraining members limit relative axial movement of the members 20 during expansion, and bending of the bellows. As shown, the restraining means comprises identical interlaced strut assemblies 22 each formed of nose and tail pieces 25, 26 the nose pieces being of frusto-conical configuration provided with ball seats 31 and having secured thereto struts 24 attached to the collars or conduits 20. The clearance 32 between the confronting ends of the tail piece 26 of one assembly and the nose piece 25 of the other assembly permits partial collapsing of the bellows but not to such an extent as to permit the ball 23 to escape from between the seats 31. The struts are relieved at 30 to allow relative pivoting of the nose pieces.
