Abstract

961,766. Inking-apparatus. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. Dec. 18, 1962 [Jan. 16, 1962], No. 47761/62. Heading B6C. A printing press of the type having a flexible blade 12 extending along the length of a fountain roll 11 and controlling the amount of ink thereon is provided with a mechanism for flexing the blade at specified portions comprising a reversible endless belt 17 driven from a motor 19, a plurality of rotatable screw means 20 positioned along the length of the blade to vary the flexure thereof, and a selectively controlled clutch means 14 for operatively connecting each screw 20 with the driven belt 17, each clutch 14 having a gear 40 in continuous meshing engagement with the belt 17 and a gear 43 adapted to intermittently mesh with a gear 30 on the screw 20 to selectively flex a portion of the blade. The gear 43 is mounted on a pivoted shaft 41 and is normally held out of engagement with the gear 30 by a spring 47. Energization of a solenoid 51 of a clutch unit 14 moves a bar 52 to the right and causes the shaft 41 to pivot against the action of the spring 47 and the gear 43 engages the gear 30. An end 32 of each screw 20 engages a lever 33 which has a cam surface 34 engaging the blade 32. A handle 20<SP>1</SP> is provided for manual adjustment. An adjustable stop 37 limits movement of a plunger 35 and thus the lever 33 so that the blade cannot contact the roll. When the plunger 35 contacts the stop 37 axial movement of the screw 20 stops and reaction between the gears 43 and 30 and the force of the spring 47 overcome a spring 54 so that gears 43 and 30 are disengaged even if the solenoid is still energized. A limit switch is actuated by grooves in a disc supporting the belt 17 to operate an indicator light on a control panel, Fig. 5 (not shown). An operator at the remote control station, which may control more than one press, controls the amount of ink delivered to a selected portion of a fountain roll by pressing one of the switches on the panel which actuates an individual solenoid. Other switches are provided to control the page-wide ink supply as opposed to the columnar supply. The operator determines the amount of ink controlled by counting the flashes of the indicator light which correspond to the movement of the belt 17.
