In a set of rods of varying lengths from 1 cm to 10 cm, for teaching arithmetic, and formed in coloured synthetic plastic, such as polythene, each rod comprises an extruded hollow body A, Fig. 6, of round or square cross-section provided with a bore a with longitudinal ribs a<SP>2</SP> and a recess a (Fig. 1, not shown) or shoulder a<SP>11</SP> at each open end, which are closed by plugs B, whose recesses or shoulders C engage the recesses or shoulders a<SP>11</SP>. The plugs are located in the bore a by the ribs a<SP>2</SP>. In another embodiment (in Fig. 1, not shown) the hollow body may be provided with one open end only.
