Abstract

960,398. Jet lift aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 13, 1963, No. 5928/63. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F1] A gas turbine jet-propulsion engine is provided with a pair of outlet nozzles which are adapted to be supplied with compressed-air from the engine through air ducting which turns the compressed-air through at least 180 degrees, the nozzles being adapted to turn the air through at least a further 90 degrees whereby the air may be used for providing forward thrust and/or direct vertical lift forces. In Fig. 2 the engine 14 is surrounded by an annular chamber 30 which communicates with the downstream end of the compressor 16 through an annular slot (not shown) in the engine casing. The chamber 30 is connected by ducts 31 and 32 to outlet nozzles 33 and 34, and a pair of outlet nozzles 23 and 24 are connected to the exhaust duct 19 of the engine. Nozzles 23, 24, 33 and 34 are swivellable to provide thrust for lift and/or forward propulsion. The aircraft may also be provided with two gas turbine vertical lift engines 42 and 43, and stability may be increased by air bled off engine 14 and fed to jets, such as 50, disposed on the wings, tailplane and nose. To increase the thrust provided by the nozzles, reheat combustion equipment could be placed in stub pipes 25 and 26 and combustion equipment could be placed in the air ducts 31 and 32.
