Abstract

Polyesteramides melting at 100 DEG -330 DEG C. and having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.4 are made by reacting (a) a dicarboxylic acid (or ester-forming derivative thereof) or an ester-forming derivative of carbonic acid (b) a dihydroxy compound at least 50 mol. per cent of which is 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol and (c) an aminocarboxylic acid (or lactam thereof) in an amount of at between 10 and 60 mol. per cent of component (a). Specified dicarboxylic acids are oxalic, adipic, suberic, azelaic, succinic, sebacic, glutaric, dimethylmalonic, a -ethylsuberic, a , a -diethyladipic, dimerized fatty, norcamphanedicarboxylic, o-and tere-phthalic, naphthalene dicarboxylic, p-carboxycarbonilic, hexahydro-o-phthalic, trans-1:4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic, sulphonyldipropionic, p:p-sulphonyldibenzoic, 4:41-benzophenone dicarboxylic and 4:41-diphenic acid; also b :b -dicarboxy diethyl ether and 1:2-di(p-carboxyphenyl) alkanes. Specified dihydroxy compounds in addition to the 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol are ethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, di-, tri- and poly-ethylene glycols, 2-methyl-1:5-pentanediol, 2:2-dimethyl-3-isopropyl-1:3-propanediol, 1:4-bis (hydroxymethyl) benzene, norcamphanedimethanol, dihydroxylates polystyrene and glycols containing internal ether, thioether, sulphone, ester and urethane groups; also hydroquinone, dihydroxynaphthalene and resorcinol. Specified amino acids and lactams are 6-aminocaproic, o -aminoundecanoic, 3-amino-2:2-dimethyporpionic, 4-amino benzoic, 4-(b -aminoethyl) benzoic, 2-(b -aminopropoxyl) benzoic, 4-aminomethyl-cyclohexanecarboxylic and 2-(b -aminopoupoxy)-cyclohexane carboxylic acid and caprolactam. The polyesteramides may be prepared by the melt phase or solid phase technique and the ingredients may be reacted simultaneously or stepwise. Uses: fibres, films, moulded articles and coating materials.
