960, 224. Feeding magnetic tapes; heads, spacing. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 6, 1960 [Dec. 9, 1959], No. 41981/60. Heading G5R. In a recorder in which one or more drummounted heads 3 scan oblique tracks on a tape 4, the tape tension and drum speed are related to entrap an air-cushion 5 and each head projects from the drum. A head-fairing 6 of smaller radius r in plan-form than the drum radius R and of increasing convexity in transverse section as seen in Fig. 3, is such that a thinner local air cushion is formed at the scanning point and a nearconstant head/tape spacing is maintained at all parts of the tape-width.
