Abstract

Stable butyl rubber latices of high solids content are prepared by emulsifying a solution of the rubber in an aliphatic hydrocarbon having 6 to 8 carbon atoms with water containing an emulsifier to give a crude latex of solids content between 6 and 13 weight per cent, removing the hydrocarbon to give a latex of solids content of 25 to 35 weight per cent and removing water containing excess emulsifier to give a concentrated latex of solids content between 60 and 70%. The water may be removed by centrifuging or creaming and the water and emulsifier removed may be recycled to the emulsification step. The concentrated latex may be diluted a second time with an amount of water equal to that removed and again concentrated to a solids content of 60 to 70%. The aqueous latex after removal of the hydrocarbon may be subjected to a two-step centrifugal action in the first of which the impurities are removed and in the second a cream layer of high polymer content and a serum layer of low polymer content are obtained, the serum layer being recycled to the emulsification step. The latex may be subjected to a strong centrifugal action in an open zone and then a weak one in a restricted separating zone. The preferred emulsifier is a mixture of the sodium salt of nonyl phenyl ether poly-oxyethylene sulphate and sodium dihydrogen orthophosphate.
