Abstract
959,851. Packaging machines. TRESCOTT CO, Inc. Feb. 6, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961], No. 4580/62. Heading B8C. A machine wraps a package along four sides with a film which is passed across the path of the package as it moves through the machine. As shown in Fig. 1, a cam 50 on a driven shaft 45, raises a heat sealing jaw 67 through cam follower 52, lever 55, shaft 57 and two rods 63; films of transparent wrapping material 1501, 170<SP>1</SP> having been previously sealed together, extend across the path of package P. As cam 50 rotates anticlockwise through 60 degrees the jaw 67 is held raised and a pusher 111, 111<SP>1</SP> is moved by telescopic arm 105 and lever 102, 103 engaging a pin 101 on cam 50 to move package P and the film to position P<SP>1</SP>, the film being guided around rollers 167, 168 on a pivoting plate 169 and guides 72, 73 on jaw 67. As the package increases the tension in films 150<SP>1</SP>, 170<SP>1</SP>, levers 161, 182 are rotated to operate switches 191, 190 to energize electric motors 158, 179 to drive rollers 156, 180 respectively which drive and support the rolls 150, 170, sufficient film being let off to cover the top, bottom and front of the package. Further rotation of cam 50 releases hook 103 when lever 102 abuts cam hub 51 and spring 115 returns pusher 111, 111<SP>1</SP>, also jaw 67 is allowed to descend. The lever 55 is engaged by a latch 126 on a rotatable plate 120, the cam 50 then engaging roller 129 on plate 120 to positively press jaw 67 toward fixed jaw 91. A switch 195 is actuated by a lever 133 to energize a heating wire on jaw 67 to fuse the films together and then sever the films to produce a seam 199. Then pin 101 on cam 50 rotates a lever 141 to release catch 126 and then cam 50 engages rollers 52 on lever 55 to raise jaw 67. The switch 195 opens to de-energize the heating wire. The films 150<SP>1</SP>, 170<SP>1</SP> may be wide enough for the side edges to be also sealed. The film encloses the two sides of an otherwise open ended package to enable the contents to be viewed, the film may be subsequently heat shrunk on to the package. Pusher 111, 111<SP>1</SP> may be adjustable for different sized packages. In Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), the package is pushed with the film on to a tiltable platform controlled by cam 50 and adjustable so that the seam 199 may be produced near the top or bottom of the package end. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 883,112.
