Abstract

959,523. Sewing machines. G. M. PFAFF A. G. July 18,1962 [July 19, 1961], No. 27531/62. Heading DIG. A label-attaching machine in which a continuous strip of label material is arranged to be fed under a raised. presser foot comprises a carriage displaceable along a horizontal guide, and a stripsupporting plate which is pivoted to the carriage and is arranged to be displaced into an inclined position between the raised presser foot and the machine stitch plate when the carriage approaches its advanced end position. A work-feeding foot 8 is carried by a bar 10 vertically slidable in the head 12a of a frame 12 to which work-feeding movements are imported by a cam wheel 6. A label-folding template 18 is-fixed to a block 17 horizontally slidable on bars 15 rigid with a bar 13 vertically slidable in head 12a. A spring 20 acts on block 17 to bias plate 18 to the label-folding position beneath foot 8. A spring 21, connected between bar 13 and a link 22 connecting bar 10 to frame 12, biases foot 8 and plate 18 towards each other. A link 24 connects block 17 to a lever 25 which is connected by a link 26 to the machine-starting lever 27, actuation of which thus serves to withdraw plate 18 from foot 8. A pin 19 on bar 13 is engaged by the slotted end 29a of a lever 29 pivoted at 29b. A bar 30, pivoted intermediately to lever 29, is biased by a spring 31 against a stud 32 on the latter. The lower end of a rod 33, slidable in a pivoted sleeve 34, normally abuts bar 30, and the upper end of rod 33 is pivoted to one arm of a bell crank lever 35, the other arm of which carries a roller 35c biased towards the armature 36 of a solenoid 37 by a spring 33a. One arm of a bell crank lever 41 carries a pin 41b which is biased by a spring 40a against a disc 38 on armature 36, and the other arm of lever 41 is formed with a slot 41a engaged by a pin 42a on a block 42 slidable on horizontal bars 43. An arm is pivoted at 44 to block 42. A block 46, fixed by a screw 45a to arm 45, carries a fluid plate 48 for a strip 47 of label-forming material. Strip 47 passes between fingers 72a pressed adjustably together by a screw 73, and under a wire guide member 48b, before it enters a tubular end of plate 48, the other end of which has side channels 48a. A finger 50a, pivoted to block 46, is spring-biased to press strip 47 against plate 48. When solenoid 37 is de-energized, spring 40a shifts block 42 to engage an ex - tension 45a<SP>1</SP> of screw 45a with the slotted end 51a of a fixed plate 51, whereby the guideplate 48 is held horizontally. A block 59, slidable on inclined bars 58, is rigid with a shear blade 55a. A co-operating shear blade 55b, pivoted at 60 to block 59, is rigid with an arm 61 formed with a slot which is engaged by a pin 62a on the lower end of a lever 63 pivoted at 62 to block 59. A spring 67 biases block 59 against a spring-biased disc 68 slidable on a bar 58, and engages the upper end of lever 63 with a roller 64 on the lower end of a lever 65 which is pivoted at 66 and is connected at its upper end to the armature 53a of a solenoid 53. Energization of the latter thereby serves to shift block 59 forwardly and to close blade 55b for severing strip 47 adjacent plate 18. At the end of a sewing operation, plate 18 moves beneath foot 8 and the presser bar 7 is raised for lifting foot 8 and plate 18 via a pin 9 or bar 10. Solenoid 37 is then energized, whereby a cam 39 on armature 36 rocks lever 35. Bar 30 is thereby depressed to actuate lever 29 when plate 18 is moved downwardly, via pin 19, into engagement with the throat plate 2a. Disc 38 simultaneously actuates lever 41 to shift block 42, whereby guide plate 48 pivots into engagement with plate 18 after extension 45a<SP>1</SP> moves free of end 51a. Movement of block 42 also serves to feed strip 47 under foot 8 by the engagement of finger 50a with one of a series of raised transverse bars 47a woven into strip 47. A pin 42b on block 42 finally engages the lower end of bar 30 to free rod 33, whereby plate 18 is raised by spring 21. When solenoid 37 is de-energized, guide plate 48 is withdrawn from between foot 8 and plate 18, and extension 45a<SP>1</SP> closes a switch 52 to energize solenoid 53 for severing strip 47. A solenoid 54 is then energized for actuating fingers 56 to fold the ends of the severed label under plate 18. Presser bar 7 then descends to lower foot 8 and plate 18 on to the throat plate, the folding fingers 56 are withdrawn, and lever 27 is actuated to withdraw plate 18 and to start the machine.
