Referring to the drawings. our invention is shown as applied to a sewing machine having a stationary bed plate 1. a standard having a forwardly extending overhanging portion 3 and a trout verticalljT extending head carried therebj7 in which is contained the mechanism for operating the needle 5.
The needle is operated in usual fashion which need not be described. In the operation of the machine a shaft 6 is rotated by belt running over a pulley 7 thereon. A shalt 8 is also rotated by connections which need not. be described throughout the rotation ot the power shaft 6. A disc 9 rotates with shaft 8. this disc carrying various cani grooves with which pins or rollers coactas will be subsequentljv described.
In the operation ot the machine a label is positioned. b v means to be described, ben ath the presser 'l'oot l0. This presser 'toot is carried by a bracket l1 and comprises a rectangular trame. the needle being adapted to sew alongside the 'tour inner edges of this Atrame in sewing the label ou a garment. During the operation ot the machine the presser loot is moved in such manner as to cause the label to be sewed successively about its tour edges; the mechanism for etlecting such movement old and accordingljY will not be described more than is necessary 'tor an understanding of our invention.
In the operation oi the machine a continuous label tape Al2 is 'ted one label length at a time into thel machine.` the lirontlabel is severed and is advanced into position to be accurately positioned beneath the presser iloot 10 to be sewed on a garment.
The label tape is shown (Fig, Ll) as being wound on a suitable reel 13 supported by a bracket 14; at one side of the machine. The tape led from this reel into a guideway which is ixedljfv secured to the adjacent side edge ci bed plate 1. Gruidewajv 15 is shown, Fig'. 3. as having a side flange 16 thereon, secured to a bracket 1T which is secured to bed plate 1.
The label tape lil, in the :lorm of our in- 'vention illustrated, comprises a continuous strip oli woven ilabric having transverse slits 1S extending part way across the saine at approximately uniform intervals, printed niatter ajjipearing on each sert ion o't tape bctween a pair ot adjacent slits, the individual labels to be Aformed from the lengths ol tape comprised between adjacent slits. The tapes preierabljY are prepared ttor use in the apparatus herein d escribed b v 'forming the slits at the same time that the label sections are printed. The slits thus 'liorn'ied will be equally spaced on the tape but in subsefluentlyY handling the tape, as explained, a certain amount ot variation in the distance between adjacent slits may occur because oi stretching ot the labric, etc. Also a certain amount o'f: 'ariation in the spacing ot the slits as 'formed may be pern'iittcd, with our invention, the ior 'ard feeding of the tape. presently to be explained, enabling the individual labels to be properlj7 presented to the cutting` folding, and sewing mechanism in spite of such variations.
The guidewaj7 l5 is positioned with its inner or forward edge slidaliiljY resting within a guide portion 19 olI a movable member, presentlyv to be described. The fixed guideway 15 is oi a width suitable to accommodate the tape and is j'n'ovided itor at least a portion ot its length with top flanges 20 which extend over the side edges of the tape to lieep the same 'trom buckling. The tape is ted 'forwardly through guide 15 by means of a reciprocating arm or pusher member 2G pivoted at its rear end on a horizontal stud 27 rarried b v thc upper end portion ot an arm Q8. the lower end of which is secured to a rock shaft 29 mounted in vertical flanges of the bracket 17 secured to bed plate 1. A horizontal rod 33 is rconnected to yoke 32 and extends-across bedy plate 1 to the oppo-y adjusting the lengths of pusher 26 the same i is preferably madel in two parts, namely the pivoted strip 26and a thin strip v261 carried thereby and `secured thereto by suitable means such as screws 34 Vextending through slot 85 in strip 261` and into the member` 26. The bell crank, referred to, has'a'liorizontal arm 60 which carries a pin 61 which eX- tends into tbe 'cam groove 62 of the revolving disc 9. The result of this construction is to reciprocate arm 38 and the pusherfor `'tape feeding vrdevice 26, 261, lat proper timed in-l tervals during the loperationof the machine,
groove 62 being properly shaped for this purpose.

Accordingly the slit 18 engaged by nose 36 will be positioned exactly at a predetermined point, at the extreme limit of inward movement of the pusher when arm 28 engages stop 42. The pusher will subsequently be retracted from this position leaving the tapein its advanced position with the slit referred to at adetinite point which point will be invariably the eX- tremerinward limit of movement of nose 86 regardless of any Vvariation in thespa'eing of the slits on thettqae.` y y Y The slit thus engaged will in each instance be the one at the rear end of the forward label section of thetape. This slidable member 116 is provided at its forward end with jaws l1? and a transverse rear seating surface 118 (Fig. 5). Then member 11G is moved forwardly by the operation of the foot treadle, as stated, the jaws 11T, 118, will slide beneath spring linger 9i? and will position the label beneath the presser foot jaw or surface 11S pushing against the rear edge of the label to push it forwardly, while `iaws 117 serve to engage the side edges of the label to hold it smooth, jaws 117 and 118 being shown in their for wardly extended position in Fig. et.
As the label moves forwardly beneath the presser foot its bent up end edges will be folded over completely' by passing beneath the bevelled inner edges of members 119, and will then move beneath the overhanging ends of members 120, secured upon the support 104:. the under surfaces of which are provid/ed with serrations to hold the label against backward movement when slide 11bl moves back. The label will thus be positioned beneath the article to which it to be sewed upon plate lO-l and in proper alignment beneath the rectangular opening in pr sser foot, 10.
A second foot treadle (not shown) is now depressed by the operator, this treadle operating through chain 121 connected to pivoted arm 122, Fig. Q, which will serve to swing belt shifter 100 to return the power belt to the .tired pulley 7 and again start the machine in operation.
The operation of the apparatus is briefly as follows: a label tape having been placed on reel 13 is inserted into guide l5 beneath the pivoted weight 21, far enough so that the foremost slit in the tape, that is, the slit at the rear of the foremost label section of the tape, will be positioned on guideway 15 a short distance in front of the nose 36 of pusher QG when the latter is in its rearmost position. The machine being started in op eration the slit engaged by nose 3G will be advanced to the predetermined point pre viously referred to, this point being determined by the engagement of arm 2 with stop L12. The point referred to is the position occupied by the knife in Fig. Knife 8O will be positioned in alignment with this point after pusher 26 has receded somewhat therefrom on its backward or outward stroke. The knife will, when positioned at this point, operate to cut oil"` the front label section, while at the same time the gripping member 8l moves downwardlyv to grip the severed front label and to so1ne what bend the ends thereof upwardly. The travelling carriage carrying the knife and gripping member and the slidable guideway 19 will then be moved away from pusher 2G into the position shown in Fig. 3. The machine now stopping, because of the shifting of the driving belt from fixed pulley 7 to the loose pulley 101, the operator will depress a a. foot treadle, as stated, to cause the operation of arm 106 and the forward movement of slide 11G to position the severed label beneath the presser foot with its ends folded over in posit-ion to be sewed upon a garment which has previously been inserted by hand beneath the presser toot. The position of the parts after the label has thus been moved transversely beneath the presser foot is shown in Fig. 4.
The operator now depresses the other foot treadle to start the machine again in oper* ation, whereupon the label thus positioned beneath the presser foot will besewed to the garment while at the same time the next forward label section of the tape will be moved iorwardly, cut ott' and moved into the position shown in Fig. 3 at the moment when the sewing of the label beneath the presser foot is completed.
The timingl of the various parts will be as follows. The needle 5 is shown in Fig. 3 in the position occupied when the sewing of a label is about to commence. The pusher Q6 whas started to move forwardly shortly before this time` and has already engaged its nose 36 with the foremost slit 18 of the tape.
Starting with this position, the presser toot and parts connected therewith swing to the right about the vertical center 70, which is to say that the presser foot moves in the direction of feed of the label tape, or upwardly of the drawings, Figs. 3, 4 and 5. Accordingly, the right-hand edge of the opening in the presser foot moves past needle 5 until the needle has sewed along a side edge of the label from the position of the needle shown in Fig. 3 to its position shown in F ig. 5.
During this relative movement of the needle from what may be termed the first corner of the rectangular opening in the presser foot to what may be termed the seeond corner. the pusher 2G will advance the slit in the tape engagedthereby to its limit of forward movement and will have started somewhat on its backward Kn'iovt-m'ient into the position shown in Fig. 5. During this movement also the movable carriage comprising sliding guideway 19, knife 80, etc., will be moving in opposite direction to that of the presser foot because of the reversing connection provided by lever 84 and connected parts interposed between the sliding guideway 19 and member 63. Accordingly, this travelling carriage moves in opposite direction to that of the forward feed of the tape, that is downwardly of the drawing in Figs. 3 and Knife 80 will reach its furthest out position, in aligiiment with the slit 18 which has been positioned at the point of Elli l no
