Control members 7 of a reactor are coupled in pairs, the members of each pair being on opposite sides of the reactor, so that they move simultaneously by equal amounts but in opposite directions. Fig. 2 shows containers 20 containing B, Cd or Hf and arranged in a chain corresponding to the member 7, two chains being linked by a chain 21. The chains run in a tube 17 divided by a partition 22 and are driven by a chain wheel over which both chain 21 and containers 20 can pass.
