Abstract

959,254. Mechanical switches, without quick action; contact-members for switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1962 [Get. 12,1961], No. 38579/62. Heading H2B. A U-shaped contact element has the legs 1 and 2 formed as barbed resilient tongues and contact surfaces 3 and 4 are provided on the centre piece. The element is mounted, for example, in a switch rotor 7 by passing the tongues through slots 8 which are tapered as shown to allow the element to swing into alignment with fixed contact ring 10 and individual contacts 11. A spring 6 is located by a protrusion 5 on the centre piece of the element and the barbs 1c and 2c retain the element in place while allowing some axial movement against spring 6. Contact surface 3 is hemispherical and surface 4 semi-cylindrical so that the element may be reversed in the rotor to provide either a bridging or interruptive switching engagement with contacts 11. The element may be made of beryllium copper and its surface, or only the surfaces 3 and 4 may be coated with a precious metal such as gold, silver, platinum or palladium.
