Abstract

958,708. Portable stills for distilling sea-water. G. INGRAM. Dec. 6, 1962 [March 14, 1962], No. 9794/62. Heading B1B. In a portable still for obtaining potable water by the distillation of sea water, the heat generated by the human body is used to vaporize water from a sponge saturated with sea water. The still comprises a waterproof envelope 1 divided into upper and lower compartments 2 and 3 respectively by an inclined waterproof partition 4, and is of a size and shape whereby it may be worn on the human body in the manner of a breast plate with the upper compartment 2 directed upwards towards the chin. Compartment 3 contains a sponge 8, which is saturated with sea water. The body heat of the wearer causes the vaporization of water from the sponge and the vapours formed pass into compartment 2 via an opening 11 in partition 4. The vapour condenses as droplets of water on the walls of compartment 2, and these droplets collect in the area 6 of the envelope, from whence the potable water can be sucked by the wearer through the flexible outlet tubes 13. The envelope is preferably made from a suitable flexible plastics material, either stout enough to maintain its opposed walls apart when worn or else provided internally with ribbed spacing elements of plastics material (not shown) to keep the opposed walls apart, and is provided with a neck strap 7. The sponge 8 may be removed from compartment 3 for soaking in sea water via an opening in the envelope normally closed by a sliding clasp 10.
