Abstract

[Also in Division A5] Portable respiratory apparatus comprises a first container 1 for a material which fixes carbon dioxide exothermically and/or produces oxygen exothermically, a second container 4 in thermal contact with the first container and for containing an evaporating coolant, and means whereby the apparatus can be worn on a user's back, the arrangement being such that, when the user is wearing the apparatus on his back, the second container is situated between said first container and the user's body. As shown, the closed circuit apparatus also comprises an oxygen bottle 3, a breathing bag 2, and an elastic gas pervious material 7 having a cavity or tubes 5 in communication with the container 4 so that the coolant (e.g. evaporating carbon dioxide snow) cools the user's back, as well as the breathing air. The coolant evaporates through discharge openings 6. The material 7 is formed with ribs and grooves (10) in its surface adjacent the user's back and with apertures 8 into the material so that the coolant's effect on the user's back is increased. The material 7 and optionally also the coolant container 4 may comprise part of a vest or jacket on which the remainder of the respiratory apparatus is mounted.
