Work to be moved past the needle of a sewing machine is held in a template 6 which is fed along by a swivel mounted pad, which can swivel when guide means co-operate with a curved portion of the template, to allow the template to turn in accordance with the required path of stitching. The template 6 comprises two halves 10, 11 between which is sandwiched the work 7, each half 10,11 having a guide slot corresponding to the required stitch path. The slots are respectively engaged by studs 14 and 15 mounted on the underside of the presser foot and on a fixed platform 16. One or other of the studs may be omitted if desired. The template 6 is fed by a pad 2 faced with non- slip material mounted on the feed bar in place of the usual feed dog and swivel mounted on the bar by a longitudinal link 27, pivoted to the pad at 26 and to the bar at 29, and a lateral link 31, pivoted to the pad at 30 and to the bar at 32. A third link 34 duplicating the link 31 is disposed below the latter. The swivel mounting of the pad permits the template to be fed without manual guidance. As the pad turns, when studs 14, 15 pass along a curved portion of the guide slot, the movement of the links 31, 34 introduce lost motion into the forward feed movement to reduce the latter, and it is stated that this results in a substantially uniform stitch length being maintained along the curved stitch path. The pad 2 has a D-shaped clearance opening 17 through which projects the platform 16 which is of a similar but reduced form. When the feed pad moves back after a feeding movement the face 47 on the opening 17 engages the face 46 on the platform to realign it in the straight ahead position before the next feeding movement. The Provisional Specification describes the provision of a forward and a rear swivelling pad, the pads co-operating with a forward and a rear presser foot respectively. The presser feet are carried on a supporting structure mounted on the presser bar.
