Abstract

958,602. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. April 7, 1961 [April 8, 1960], No. 12663/61. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] A method of welding thermoplastic material comprises continuously heating a welding element 6, bringing the hot element 6 into contact with the material to be welded, pressing the element 6 against the material by means of a cooling element 11, withdrawing the element 11 from the element 6 and withdrawing the element 6 from the material. In the embodiment shown a lid 20 of synthetic plastic is welded on to a container 19 held in a mould 17 which has a silicone rubber, heat-insulating insert 18. The element 6 comprises a copper membrane and is heated by elements on a plate 5 to which it is clamped. In use, a device 1 is lowered to hold the lid 20 in position, the element 6 contacts and heats the portions to be welded and the element 11 comprising a water-cooled, annular jacket is brought into contact with the outer rim of the element 6 to exert pressure thereon. Welding takes place and after a time delay dependant on the material welded, the element 11, then the element 6 and finally the device 1 are raised so that the sealed container can be removed from the mould. The element 6 may be thermostatically controlled or, alternatively, if the plate 5 is made of an electrically-insulating material the element 6 may be directly heated by current supplied from a suitable regulator. A mica insulator 21 may be provided within the plate 5 but is not necessary when a current impulse is applied to the element 6. The invention may be applied to packaging machines to seal foils of cellulosic material coated with hydrophobic material or with polymers.
