A transducer 3 inside the metal hull 1 of a ship is coupled to the outside sea through an unbroken portion of the hull 1, two or more plates 4, 6, 44, 66 spaced on either side of the unbroken portion of the hull, and fillings 5, 7, 55, 77 between the plates and the hull of material having at least approximately the same density and elasticity as water. The transducer 3 may be immersed in a tank 2 of water or it may be fastened directly to the innermost plate.
