In an apparatus for cutting material into sections of uniform but variable length by movement towards and away from one another of the material, which is fed in band form over a supporting table 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP> and a cutting tool adapted to move both at right angles to and in the direction of movement of the material, the cutting tool being movable from a retracted position in the direction towards the material and back again, means movably supporting the table and holding the same and the material outside the range of the cutting tool, and actuating means to move the table in phase with the tool movement into the range of the cutting tool to cause the tool to cut off a section from the material. As shown a waffle or dough band 18 is fed between rollers 17 on to a three part table 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP>. The sections 1 and 1<SP>11</SP> are pivotally connected at 6 and 6<SP>1</SP>, the ends nearest each other being movable up and down taking the section 1<SP>1</SP> with them. The section 1<SP>1</SP> is also able to move in a horizontal direction with the cutting tool during a cutting stroke. A band saw 2 and its support 13 are oscillated about a pivot 14 by means of a crank pair 7 connected to the traverse 13<SP>1</SP> by arms 8 slidable in bearings 9. The height of the bearings 9 can be adjusted to determine the centre of oscillation of the bars 8 and thus the oscillating width of the handsaw 2 and the table section 1<SP>1</SP>. A contact drum 16 energizes an electromagnet 4, which raises the table 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11 </SP>in phase with the oscillation of the bandsaw 2 so that the waffle band is cut. A selector switch 15 enables the frequency of this energization to be controlled so that it can be the same as, twice, three or more times the oscillation frequency of the bandsaw 2. An electromagnet 5 is energized whenever electromagnet 4 is not energized to return the table to its normal position. The waffle band may first be cut longitudinally by a frame saw 19.
