Abstract

957,743. Coating webs. ILFORD Ltd. Oct. 25, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961 ], No. 29328/61. Heading D1L. In a method of applying a thin layer of coating liquid to a travelling web 1 (e.g. a gelatin or other colloid material to a film base), the liquid is applied to the web at a point where the web has a vertical component of motion and a chamber 10 of the liquid applicator has a vertical height of between 12 and 40 mms. so that a significant static pressure is created between the upper and lower regions of the bead of liquid confined between the chamber 10 and the web 1. In the forms shown liquid is supplied to the chamber 10 through a slot 9 formed between jaws 7, 8 of the applicator; if the chamber is deep (measured from web 1 to wall 11) liquid may be fed to the chamber by means other than the slot 9. To prevent air bubbles remaining in the bead a member 14 (see Fig. 3) may be placed in chamber 10 to cause controlled circulation of the liquid therein. In addition liquid and bubbles may be continuously or intermittently withdrawn from the space between the member 14 and wall 11. The dimensions of the device depend upon the viscosity, surface tension and density of the liquid and on the required coating weight and the speed of the web.
