Abstract

957,702. Aerials. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Jan. 29, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3537/63. Heading H4A. A scanning aerial system comprises a fixed circular waveguide 2, Figs. 1 and 2, or a rectangular waveguide, Fig. 12 (not shown), disposed longitudinally in a rotating cylinder 4 with a longitudinal slot 3 in the waveguide 2 adjacent the cylinder 4, which cylinder has a plurality of circumferentially displaced rows of longitudinally spaced circumferential slots as shown in developed form in Fig. 4, the longitudinal slot spacing being constant in any one row of slots but varying progressively from one row to another so that the passage of a row of slots 5, Fig. 3, across the waveguide slot 3 defines a plurality of radiating apertures 6 which produce a directional beam in the plane passing through the slot 3 and the axis of the cylinder 4, the spacing of the apertures 6 (and thence the direction of the beam) changing stepwise, Fig. 5 (not shown), as the different rows of slots in the cylinder 4 cross the waveguide slot 3. Alternatively the slots in the cylinder 4 may be inclined, Fig. 7 (not shown), or replaced by substantially continuous slots, Figs. 9 and 11 (not shown), to produce a substantially continuous scan, Figs. 8 and 10 (not shown). As described the slot patterns produce a linear or non-linear sawtooth scan and the system is mounted at the focal line of a cylindrical parabolic reflector 1, Fig. 1.
