Abstract
A continuous process for the manufacture of 6-aminopenicillanic acid comprises adding cells of a bacterium as specified below to a solution of a penicillin or a salt thereof, and, a suitable time after adding the cells, continuously or intermittently adding more of the solution of the penicillin or the salt thereof while simultaneously withdrawing a substantially equal volume of the reaction mixture, whereafter 6-aminopenicillanic acid is isolated by conventional means from the reaction mixture which has been withdrawn from the reactor vessel. The bacterium may be a member of the species Escherichia coli which produces suitable penicillin-splitting enzymes, a member of the species Alcaligenes faecalis, or a member of the genera Aerobacter, Proteus, Pseudomonas or Micrococcus.
