Abstract

957,385. Jointing. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 19, 1962 [April 18, 1961], No. 10348/62. Heading B3V. In securing a good heat conducting portion to a glass portion a thermoplastic material is adhered to the heat conducting portion, the portions are assembled with the thermoplastic material between them and the assembly is subjected to heat and pressure. In securing a metal rear view mirror bracket 12 to an automobile windscreen 16 the bracket is cleaned, heated in an oven to 120-250‹ F. and supported in a fixture 11 with its bonding surface 13 horizontal. A thermoplastic material 15 of polyvinyl butyral is placed on surface 13 to adhere thereto and the cleaned and preheated to 120-250‹ F. windscreen is pressed on to the material 15 by a plunger 17 operated by hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical means and an induction coil 19 mounted within the plunger is energized from a high frequency source, the pressure being maintained after the coil is deenergized. In a modification the coil surrounds a movable ceramic bonded powder iron core in contact with the windscreen and the energization of the coil is controlled by directing an infra-red radiation pyrometer towards the bracket.
