Abstract

1,267,837. Brazing. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 12 June, 1969, No. 29826/69. Heading B3R. In brazing a non-ferrous metal member to a metal member, a layer of brazing alloy is inserted between the members, the assembly is subjected to induction heating which is regulated by pyrometric observation to provide a brazing temperature in slight excess of the liquidus temperature of the brazing alloy, the heating is terminated after a predetermined period and the assembly is gas-cooled to a temperature for hardening the brazing alloy within thirty seconds after reaching the brazing temperature, a uniform squeeze force being applied to the assembly at least during the heating and cooling periods. A non-ferrous member 5 of agehardened chromium-beryllium alloy, aluminium, aluminium alloy or nickel base alloy and a member 6 of silver-tungsten or copper-tungsten are cleaned by acid, sprayed with flux and assembled with a preformed member 7 of brazing alloy, the assembly being held in a water-cooled induction coil 9 between a stop 14 and a support 12 carried on a fluid-actuated piston-rod 11. With the assembly under squeezing force the coil 9 is energized from a motor generator 18 controlled by an infra-red pyrometer 22 directed to an emissivity stabilized area, i.e. provided with a stabilized radiation indication surface by spray coating with a high temperature paint, of the surface of the assembly to attain the preselected temperature and hold it for a predetermined time after which the coil is de-energized and forced cooling of the assembly by air jet 26 is effected. The brazed assembly is automatically unloaded from the apparatus by a solenoid-operated valve 15 under control of a timer 30 to cause pistonrod 11 to retract subsequent to air cooling. The brazing alloy may be a silver, copper, zinc, cadmium, phosphorus alloy, the member 6 may be a tip for a power circuit breaker contact and the member 5 may be a copper-chromium alloy tip support member.
