Abstract
An unsaturated alkyd resin is obtained by reacting together (a) 2 to 5 parts by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, (b) 25 to 60 parts by weight of a saturated monobasic carboxylic acid or non-drying fatty acid oil having at least nine carbon atoms in the molecule, (c) 20 to 55 parts by weight of a saturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, and (d) sufficient polyhydric alcohol to provide an excess of hydroxyl groups of 10% to 75% above that required to react with the carboxyl groups present, in the presence of 0.005% to 0.5% by weight of the reaction mass of a polymerization inhibitor. The inhibitor may be hydroquinone, anthraquinone diphenylquinone or paraquinone. The alkyd resin may be copolymerized with methyl methacrylate and/or ethyl acrylate, and the copolymer may be used in coating compositions which may include alkoxy-modified amine-formaldehyde resins, solvents and pigments. In examples alkyd resins are prepared from p-t-butyl benzoic acid, pelargonic acid, phthalic anhydride, glycerine, trimethylolethane, maleic anhydride, coconut fatty acid, 2,3-butylene glycol and coconut oil in the presence of hydroquinone; the alkyd resins are copolymerized with methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate in the presence of t-butyl perbenzoate, and the copolymers are used as coating compositions with xylene, an alkoxy-modified melamine-formaldehyde resin and titanium dioxide. Other suitable materials for preparing the alkyd resins mentioned are lauric acid, 2-ethyl hexyl carboxylic acid, cotton seed oil, caster oil, maleic acid, itaconic acid, citraconic acid, mesaconic acid, fumeric acid, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, butyl phthalic acid, succinic acid, adipic acid azelaic acid, endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid, chlorendic acid, malonic acid and sebacic acid. Other alkoxy-modified amine-formaldehyde resins which may be used in coating compositions are those derived from urea and/or melamine and formaldehyde and alkylated with an alcohol having one to six carbon atoms.
