Abstract
957,084. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 9, 1962 [Oct. 19, 1961], No. 37555/61. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G3] A mass spectrometer includes means for providing an auxiliary ion controlling field which tends to prevent drift of the ion beam trajectory relative to the collector assembly. As shown, a mass spectrometer comprises an ion source 1, an electrostatic analyser 10, a magnetic analyser 2 having a field coil 5, a collector 3 and a connecting duct 4. The coil 5 is supplied from a circuit including a voltage source 6 in series with a variable impedance 7 and a sensing resistor 8. A scanning control unit 9 either provides a waveform to vary the current in the coil so that a range of ions is collected or, alternatively, provides one of two or more fixed voltages so that ions of a particular mass are collected. To counteract for the drift of the ion beam trajectory due to variation in the parameters of the analysing system, a drift control unit 11 provides a steadily varying voltage of suitable magnitude and polarity. The difference between the voltage across resistor 8 and the voltage supplied by the units 9, 11 is amplified by a difference amplifier 12 the output from which controls the impedance 7 so as to control the current through the coil 5 and reduce the input of the amplifier 12 to zero. The output from the drift control unit 11 may be selected manually, e.g. in accordance with a meter or oscillator reading taken at the collector 3, or it may be controlled automatically in accordance with the output of a sensing unit, such as a Hall plate or a vibrating coil, located in the magnetic field of the analyser 2. The auxiliary ion controlling field may be an auxiliary magnetic field spaced from the main deflecting field (Fig. 1a, not shown), on auxiliary electrostatic field coincident with or spaced from the main electrostatic field (Figs. 2 and 2a, not shown), or an auxiliary ion accelerating field (Fig. 3, not shown).
