Abstract
Sodium borohydride, NaBH4, is recovered from a suspension thereof with sodium methylate in petroleum oil by extracting with water, separating the aqueous phase containing NaBH4, NaOH, and methanol, removing methanol therefrom, and recovering NaBH4 from the residue. The suspension is prepared by reacting NaH and trimethyl borate in suspension in a petroleum oil at 250-280 DEG C. under atmospheric pressure. The suspension is extracted with H2O at 20-60 DEG C., and the aqueous-alcoholic solution of NaBH4 and NaOH is separated by decantation or centrifuging, the oil being recycled. The methanol is recovered by fractional distillation preferably under vacuum, and the methanol may be reacted with boric acid to form trimethyl borate which is returned to the process. The aqueous NaBH4 and NaOH solution from the distillation is evaporated preferably under vacuum to a syrupy consistency, and evaporated to dryness at atmospheric pressure. The NaBH4 is extracted from the solid residue by non-aqueous solvent, e.g. ethylene diamine, liquid ammonia, isopropylamine, dimethylformamide, n-propylamine, n-butylamine, or dimethyl sulphoxide, and the resulting solution filtered and evaporated to dryness. The solvent may be recovered and recycled.
