Abstract

Compositions comprise a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate in amount from 45 to 95 weight per cent of the total composition and a hydrocarbon wax having a melting point of 145 to 195 DEG F. and containing less than 75 weight per cent of normal paraffins, said copolymer having a vinyl acetate content greater than 25 and less than 30 weight per cent and a melt index of 0.1 to 25.0. The copolymer may be prepared by copolymerizing ethylene and vinyl acetate at high pressure in a tubular reactor in the presence of t.-butyl hydroperoxide. The wax is preferably a petroleum wax and may be paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax or mixtures thereof. The compositions may also comprise pigments and fillers, and may be used for coating, laminating, injection or extrusion moulding or for unsupported films.ALSO:Compositions comprise a hydrocarbon wax having a melting point of 145 DEG to 195 DEG F. and containing less than 75 weight per cent of normal paraffins, and from 45 to 95 weight per cent of the total composition of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate having a vinyl acetate content greater than 25 and less than 30 weight per cent and a melt index of 0.1 to 25.0. The wax may be produced by distillation or selective solvent extraction processes, and may comprise paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, or mixtures thereof. In comparative examples compositions are described containing waxes of melting points 131.9, 136.8, 151.9 and 175.0 DEG F. containing respectively 89, 54, 71 and 20 weight per cent of normal paraffins. The compositions may also comprise pigments and fillers, and may be used for coating, laminating, injection or extrusion moulding or for unsupported films.
