Abstract

956,813. Radar display systems. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Dec. 13, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 7148/62. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G1] In a radar display system of the type incorporating a storage C.R.T., means are provided for producing a signal representative of the changing portion of a raster corresponding to the scanning raster of the reading beam of the storage tube intercepted by a line moving over the former raster in synchronism with the azimuthal variation of direction of the spacesearching aerial of the radar system and means are also provided for superimposing the produced signal in a video signal channel fed with output from the storage tube. In a first embodiment, the storage tube 8 writes the signal received from the receiver 7 with a radial P.P.I. type scan and reads with a television raster type scan under the control of line and field deflection units 9 and 10 and synchronizer 11. The units 9 and 10 also control the production of a television type raster R of uniform brightness on a C.R.T. 13 in synchronism with the read raster of the storage tube. The motor 2 rotating the aerial 1 also rotates, via lining up means, a disc 4 having a slot 5 therein. The slot thus rotates in synchronism with the scanning direction of the aerial. The radial portion of the raster R seen through the slot 5 is projected on to a photo-electric transducer 16 to produce a signal which, after amplification is added to the read output from the storage tube 8, in mixer 18, for application to a display tube 19 having a television type raster in synchronism with that of the storage tube and the C.R.T. 13. The display tube 19 therefore shows a television type display having a superimposed radial line rotating to represent the scanning direction of the aerial 1. The slot 5 may incorporate a graded light filter to cause the leading edge of the radial line to be brighter than the trailing edge. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the radial line is produced by a radial deflection C.R.T. showing the direction of the aerial as a rotating radial line. The radial line is then viewed by a television camera incorporating scanning means controlled by units 9 and 10 and the output of the camera is added to that of the storage tube.
