A constant level 4 of electrolyte is maintained in a storage battery by float-operated valves independently opening and closing water inlets 9 to cells 3 as float members 12 fall and rise. A catalyst recombination vent plug 8 closes a filler opening to a tapered chamber 7 from which the water is distributed to the inlets 9. Gas escape holes (not shown) are provided in the sloping walls of chamber 7.
