Abstract

Cold-hardening reaction lacquers are produced by partially polymerizing methylmethacrylate in the presence of a chain-transfer agent and a catalyst and in the presence of allyl acrylate or allyl methacrylate until a syrupy initial polymer is formed which may then be hardened. The syrupy initial polymer may before being applied to the surface to be coated, be brought to a suitable viscosity by adding monomeric methylmethacrylate. The initial polymerization may be effected in the presence of plasticising monomers or mixtures thereof such as ethyl-, butyl-, decyl- or ethylhexyl-acrylate and ethylhexyl-, butyl- or decyl-methacrylate. Preferably 2 to 20% by weight of the allyl compound, and up to 20% by weight of the plasticising monomers, based on the monomer mixture, are used. In the initial polymerization the catalyst may be azodiisobutyric acid dinitrile and the chain-transfer agent may be a mercaptan or an ester of mercaptoacetic acid. The preferred catalyst systems for the hardening of the initial polymers are (a) a peroxidic compound and a tertiary amine which preferably contains at least one aromatic radical bonded directly to the nitrogen atom and (b) a diacyl peroxide, a monofunctional or a polyfunctional mercaptan and/or esters of mercaptoacetic acid and a tertiary anine which comtains at least one aromatic radical bonded directly to the nitrogen atom. Lists of peroxides, amines and mercaptans are given. Plasticisers, cross-linking agents, dye-stuffs, fillers e.g. highly dispersed metal or metalloid oxides which have been hardened pyrogenically, ultra-violet stabilisers, and paraffin or wax, may be added to the reaction lacquers before hardening. In the examples (1) methyl methacrylate is polymerized with allyl methacrylate in the presence of glycol dimercaptoacetate and azodiisobutyric acid dinitrile and the syrup obtained after dilution with monomeric methylmethacrylate is hardened with diisopropylol-p-toluidine and benzoyl peroxide paste (in dibutyl phthalate). (2) methyl methacrylate, ethylmethacrylate, ethylhexyl methacrylate and allyl methacrylate are copolymerized and before hardening as in Ex. (1), paraffin may be added; (5) methylmethacrylate, ethylmethacrylate, ethylhexylmethacrylate and allyl acrylate are copolymerized.
