Abstract
A dry lubricant adapted for use on a metallic surface comprises a principal disulphide selected from MoS2, WS2, ZrS2 and TiS2 together wit a metal sulphide additive differing from and less thermodynamically stable than (i.e. having a lower negative free energy of formation than) both the principal disulphide and any sulphide of the metallic surface upon which the lubricant is to be used. Examples are given of the use of Sb2S5, PtS, HgS (red), Ag2S, PbS, FeS, Cu2S, CuS, Au2S, Bi2S3, SnS2, HgS (black), Tl2S3 and Cr2S3 as additives to MoS2 for lubricating steel and of SnS2, Sb2O5, CaS, BaS, CdS, Cr2S3, Ag2S and Bi2S3 as additives to MoS2 for lubricating copper.
