Abstract

In a process for reducing the particle size of a pulverizable pigment, the pigment is agitated with particulate grinding elements such as sand or beads composed of glass, alumina, silica or non-friable plastic materials, the majority of said grinding elements ranging in size from 0.25 to 2.5 mm., and an organic liquid which has a surface tension not greater than 40 dynes per cm. at 20 DEG C. and which is substantially a non-solvent for the pigment. Where the process is worked continuously the liquid medium, which may be kerosene, benzene, toluene, xylene, trichloroethylene, a chloro-benzene, methanol, ethylene-glycol monoethyl or monomethyl ether, ethanol, a chloro-toluene, isopropanol, isobutanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or "white spirit," and the pigment are introduced continuously into a vessel containing the grinding elements, which are agitated, and the suspension of pigment is removed via a pipe and a gauze filter, the vessel being kept cool. The pigment may be isolated by filtering, distilling, centrifuging or steam distilling. In the examples, copper chlorophthalocyanine, copper phthalocyanine, acid pastoo copper phthalocyanine, dibromo-anthanthrone, 2:4-dinitrobenzeneazo - b - naphthol, iron oxide, lead chromate, 1:11:5:111 - trianthrimide, Bordeaux pigment, violet triphendioxazine pigment, and flavanthrone are treated by the above process. Specifications 293,071, 686,234, 810,005, 911,825 and U.S.A. Specification 2,486,351 are referred to.ALSO:A process for reducing the particle size of a pulverisable solid comprises agitating the solid with particulate grinding elements such as sand or beads of glass, alumina, silica or non-pliable plastic materials, the majority of said elements ranging in size from 0,25-2,5 mm., and an organic liquid, having a surface tension not greater than 40 dynes per cm. at 20 DEG C., which is substantially a non-solvent for the pulverisable solid. The organic liquid may be, e.g., kerosene, "white spirit", benzene, toluene, xylene, trichloroethylene, a chlorobenzene, a chlorotoluene, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, isobutanol, ethylene glycol, mono-methyl or mono-ethyl ether, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. Examples are given of p pulverisable solids which are dyestuffs or paint pigments (see Division C4) treated by the above process. Specifications 293,071, 686,234, 810,005, 911,825 and U.S.A. Specification 2,486,351 are referred to.
