956,508. Mixing plastics. DRAISWERKE G.m.b.H. Jan. 19, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 2091/62. Heading B1C. In a method for the continuous production of plastics the raw materials are fed into the first of a number of mixing drums arranged in series, the working of the mix in each drum and the amount contained in it being controlled in dependence on the condition in which the mix leaves the preceding drum. As shown, there are seven mixing drums I to VII each having a shaft carrying a plurality of individual mixing tools as at 20, 21, each shaft being provided with a separate speed-controlled motor 5, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19. The first three drums have feeding screws 2, 7, 24 also driven by speed-controlled motors 3, 8, 25. The drums III and IV are provided with an adjustable or replaceable discharge baffle 26. Pre-mixing takes place in the drum I with the shaft rotating at about 3,000 r.p.m. ; softener is added through the pipe 22 in the drum II; in drum III the mix is heated, by the friction of the rotating tools, to a temperature of 100-130 ‹C. at which the moisture contents are driven off. Further working to slightly below plasticization temperature takes place in drum IV, plasticization in drum V, kneading in drum VI, and cooling to granular form in drum VII which is jacketed as at 31. There may be means to vary the speed of each mixer or feed screw shaft in dependence on the viscosity of the mix in the preceding drum or the power consumption of its mixing shaft driving motor. The separate motors may be replaced by a common motor connected to the various drive shafts by continuously variable-ratio drive means. The drums may be disposed in the vertical or horizontal plane or intermediately and be parallel as shown or arranged obliquely to each other.
