The invention relates to the position measuring apparatus of the parent Specification, comprising a series of similar, cylindrical, magnetic pins 10 (Fig. 1) assembled side by side for movement through the gaps in two C-shaped cores, 20, 20<SP>1</SP> wound with coils connected in a bridge circuit, and is characterized in that the cores comprise alternate plates of magnetic material 22, 22<SP>1</SP> and insulating material 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, whereby errors due to variations in the pins are minimised. Each plate has a thickness equal to half the distance between the centres of adjacent pins, and may be made up of thinner laminations.
