Abstract

956,086. Evaporating liquids in film form. ETABLISSEMENTS LAGUILHARRE. April 25, 1962 [July 28, 1961], No. 15854/62. Heading B1B. In an evaporator comprising a bundle of externally-heated, vertical tubes 3 mounted between an upper feed chamber 6 and a lower liquid/vapour receiving chamber 9, a liquiddistribution device being provided in the upper chamber, the upper and lower chambers are each divided, by partitions 15 and 18 respectively, into two compartments, and pipes are provided whereby two separate groups of tubes are formed, so that the liquid being evaporated, having flowed in film-form down the inner surface of the tubes of one group of tubes, can be pumped up from the lower chamber and distributed into the upper ends of the other group of tubes. More than two compartments can be formed in the upper and lower chambers by providing additional partitions. Chamber 6 contains three perforated horizontal plates mounted one above the other, the number of orifices in the plates progressively increasing in the downward direction. The liquid to be concentrated, e.g. milk, fruit juice or black liquor, is introduced into the evaporator through pipe 17, and is distributed by the perforated plates into the upper ends of the tubes of the right-hand group. The partiallyconcentrated liquid collected in the right-hand compartment of chamber 9 is pumped through pipes 21 and 16 into the left-hand compartment of chamber 6, whence it is distributed into the left-hand group of tubes. The concentrated product is discharged by pump 20. The vapour is freed from entrained liquid in separator 12, and flows out through outlet 13.
