A rotary can-filling machine in which the bottom of each can is moved outwardly to bank the can whilst maintaining the can top in alignment with a filling nozzle positioned thereabove during the filling operation, has a circular can track 20 comprising inner and outer rails 61, 66 carried on adjustable supports 38, 42 respectively mounted on brackets 33 spaced around a fixed frame 32; a curved guide rail 47 is also supported by the brackets. Cans are fed from a table 28 by a star wheel 29 to pockets 27 in an annulus 26 on a rotary turret 24, and discharge nozzles fed from a reservoir 22 are aligned with the pockets to fill the cans during their travel towards a table 31. At the filling zone A-A, Fig. 1, each nozzle is opened and a measured amount of liquid is fed into the can before it reaches the zone B-B. The inlet and outlet ends of the rails are secured to the tables 28 and 31, and the banking of the cans begins at zone C-C where they are approximately half-filled and reaches a maximum at zone 9-9 when the cans are completely filled. Banking is accomplished by gradually moving each can bottom outwardly relatively to the top by means of a can 62 on the inner rail while maintaining the outer rail 66 level with the discharge table 31; simultaneously, the can moves along a downwardly-inclined portion of the inner rail. From the zone 7-7 to zone 9-9 the angle of tilt is constant and the can is moved outwardly by the cam and the guide rail 47. After passing the zone 9-9 the can moves in a straight path and its bottom inner edge moves along an upwardly-inclined portion of the inner rail causing its upper outer edge to swing outwardly whereby the can is returned to an upright position.
