Abstract

The invention relates to a method of controlling the number of mediterranean fruit flies in an area infested therewith which comprises applying to a substrate disposed within said area at least one attractant of the general formula: <FORM:0955681/A5-A6/1> wherein X represents oxygen or sulphur and R represents a hydrogen, a halogen atom or a methyl group and R1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, whereby to attract said mediterranean fruit flies to said substrate and subsequently trapping in an insect trap and/or subjecting to the action of an insecticidal active ingredient, said mediterranean fruit flies so attracted. The insecticide may be disposed on the substrate. The attractant may be used in the form of a composition which may contain in addition to the attractant a solid carrier, an insecticide, a liquid containing a capillary active substance which may be anionic, nonionic or cationic, a yellow colourant and/or a foodstuff for said flies. The composition may be in the form of an emulsion, wettable powders, suspension, dust or window putty or disposed on wood, glass sheets, paper, foam rubber, gauze, cord or flexes as baits. Specified insecticides are 1 - isopropyl - 3 - methyl pyrazolyl - (5) - dimethyl carbamate; 1 - phenyl - 3 - methyl pyrazolyl - (5) - dimethyl carbamate; 2 - dimethyl carbamyl - 3 - methyl pyrazolyl - (5)-dimethyl carbamate; o,o - diethyl - o - (2-isopropyl - 4 - methyl - pyrimidyl - (6) - thiophosphate; o,o - dimethyl - s - (1,2 - biscarbethoxy ethyl) - dithiophosphate; Diplerex; Parathion; dimethyl - 1 - methoxy - 2,2 - dichlorovinyl phosphate; DDT; isobornyl thiocyanoacetate and 2 - (2 - butoxyethoxy)-ethyl thiocyanate.
