Abstract

Acetone-formaldehyde condensation products which contain 1 to 4 methylol groups per molecule are produced by a two step condensation of acetone and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline condensation catalyst, the first step being performed at pH 8-9 and 0 DEG to 20 DEG C. and the second at pH 10-12 at 60 DEG to 100 DEG C. The pH required for said second step may be obtained by adding more alkaline catalyst on completion of the first step. The number of methylol groups per molecule is varied by adjusting the equivalent ratios of the reactants. Examples illustrate the preparation of condensation products having 3.7 to 3.8 and 1.9 to 2.1 methylol groups per molecule.
