A portable hand tool, particularly a router, comprises a housing consisting of two relativelymovable parts, of which one part 14 contains the motor for operating the cutter tool 32 and the other part 16 serves as a work-engaging part, and two gripping handles 60, 62 for manipulating the housing, the handle 62 being operatively connected to control means for the motor so that the operator may simultaneously manipulate the housing and control the motor. The lower cylindrical extension 18 of the part 14 fits into a split collar 20 forming an extension of the part 16, which is constituted by a cage 36 having a work-engaging pad 38 secured upon its lower foraminous end 40; the inner wall of the collar 20 has helical grooves 26, 28 engaged by pins 30 projecting from the extension 18 so that, by releasing clamping screws, the part 14 can be rotated relatively to the part 16 and raise or lower the tool 32. The handle 62, which like the handle 60 is mounted on the housing part 16, is directly connected to a rotary valve 70 controlling the supply of air to a pneumatic drive motor through a hose 104 which is connected to the top of the housing by a swivel point 42. When an electric motor is used, the handle 62 may directly control a switch or rheostat connected by a cable to a swivel member at the top of the housing. Alternatively, the handle may be connected by a pair of meshing gear segments to a pneumatic valve or switch or the pneumatic valve may be mounted on a swivelling member at the top of the housing and be linked to the handle by levers and an adjustable connecting rod.
