Abstract

A composition of improved mechanical properties is obtained by mixing with a crystalline polymer of an olefin, at least one trivalent metal salt of a di- or poly-carboxylic acid or of a monocarboxylic acid containing at least one ring structure. Specified polymers are those of C2 to C4 mono-olefins, in particular propylene, and specified salts are those of Al, Ti, Cr or Fe, in particular Al-di-p-tert. Bu benzoate, Al-mono-p-tert. Bu benzoate, Al adipate and Ti-p-tert. Bu benzoate. The description adds that the acids may contain substituents such as -OH, -NH2, -halogen, -OR, -NO2 or -ester groups. Optional ingredients are rubbery materials such as copolymers of ethylene, propylene and/or butylene, polyisobutylene, butyl rubber, polybutadiene, polypropylene, polyisoprene, styrenebutadiene copolymers, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers, silicone rubbers and natural rubber; and stabilizers such as 4,41-thio bis (6-t Bu-m-cresol) and dilauryl thiodipropionate. Aqueous media or organic solvents may be utilized in forming the compositions and, in a preferred method, the salts may be formed in situ in a polymer dispersion. Applications specified are threads, bars, sheets, films, granules, tapes and flakes. Specifications 802,460, 835,152, 835,864, 856,793 and 885,325 are referred to.
