Abstract

A silicone rubber-forming composition, for coating glass tapes (see Division B2), is made by mixing together (a) a dispersion of a dialkyl- or alkylaryl-polysiloxane containing a reinforcing filler in aromatic solvents, (b) a solvent-free dialkyl- or alkylaryl polysiloxane containing non-reinforcing fillers and (c) an organic peroxide catalyst. Fillers specified are silica aerogel (reinforcing), and titania and zinc oxide (non-reinforcing). In the example (a) 100 parts (weight) of a 40% (weight) toluene dispersion of a dimethylpolysiloxane containing 26% silica aerogel, (b) 40 parts of a dimethylpolysiloxane containing 33% TiO2, (c) 2.6 parts of benzoyl peroxide, and 1 part of iron oxide, were mixed together, applied to a glass tape and cured in situ.ALSO:An insulating tape is made by combining (a) a dispersion of a dialkyl- or alkylaryl-polysiloxane containing a reinforcing filler in aromatic solvents, and (b) a solvent-free dialkyl- or alkylaryl-polysiloxane containing a non-reinforcing fillers, adding thereto an organic peroxide and applying the resulting combination (see Division C3) as a coating on a tape consisting of woven glass fibre. If desired, the surface of the glass fabric may be given a grounding consisting of a dispersion of a dialkylpolysiloxane containing a reinforcing filler and including benzoyl peroxide. The tape is then heated at 90-110 DEG C. to remove solvents and to convert the siloxane to the semi-vulcanized state, final curing of the siloxane being effected in situ. An example is given.
