Abstract

A primer for adhering a vinyl resin coating to a siliceous surface comprises a mixture of a methylmethacrylate polymer and an unesterified epoxy resin dispersed or dissolved in an organic solvent, together with an aminoalkyl alkoxy silane, e.g. gamma-aminopropyl triethoxy silane or delta-aminobutyl - methyldiethoxy - silane. Curing agents for the epoxy resin, e.g. diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamines, diethylamino-propylamine, dibutylaminopropylamine, m-phenylene diamine and dicyandiamide may be included.ALSO:A primer for adhering a vinyl resin coating to a siliceous (e.g. glass) surface comprises a mixture of a methyl methacrylate polymer and an unesterified epoxy resin dispersed or dissolved in an organic solvent, together with an aminoalkyl alkoxy silane. A curing agent for the epoxy resin, e.g. an amine or dicyandiamide, may also be present. Numerous exemplary compositions are given. The primer may be applied to the siliceous surface, the solvent volatilized, and a vinyl resin surface coating composition, e.g. a plastisol or organosol, then applied and cured. In a modification, a solution or dispersion of an aminoalkyl alkoxy silane is first applied to the siliceous surface, followed by a mixture of an epoxy resin and a methyl methacrylate polymer dispersed or dissolved in a solvent, and a vinyl resin surface coating is applied subsequently. Pre-treatment of glass surfaces with polyoxyethylene monostearate does not affect the adherence of the coatings applied, according to the invention. Articles coated include glass aerosol containers, glass bobbins or spindles for winding textile filaments, and the faces of television tubes. The primer may be used for laminating two or more glass sheets with interposed vinyl resin layers.
