Abstract

<PICT:0954892/C2/1> Metal alkoxides or alkyl metal compounds from aluminium, magnesium, sodium and lithium in solid form may be made by a process comprising forming a packing of the metal in a column, providing within a container at the base of said column and completely separated therefrom a charge of reagent (alcohol or alkyl halide), heating said charge to provide vapour phase reagent which is conducted to said metal packing to effect at least partial reaction within said packing, condensing the remainder of vaporized and unreacted reagent and returning it countercurrently to the vapour through said packing to abstract heat from within said column and to remove the metal compound produced within said column and carry it to the said container, venting hydrogen in the case of reaction with alcohol to relieve pressure within said column and continuing to heat said reagent to effect its fractional vaporization and successive reaction with the metal packing to result in substantially complete conversion of the reagent (alcohol or alkyl halide) into the metal derivative (metal alkoxide or alkyl metal compound respectively). Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for the production of aluminium isopropoxide. Isopropyl alcohol is charged into a reaction vessel 10. Above the vessel is a column 12 containing the metal (aluminium) 13. At the top of the column is a condenser 16 and vent 18 to allow hydrogen formed during the reaction to escape. The vessel 10 is surrounded by a heating jacket 20 which may be heated by steam or hot water or by electrical heating elements 21. An inclined syphon tube 22 with its lower end submerged in the contents of the vessel extends through the wall of the vessel. Outlet line 26 leads from the vessel to a flash still 28 when the unreacted reagent (in this case isopropyl alcohol) is removed and returned to the reaction vessel via line 32. The product (aluminium isopropoxide) may be withdrawn from the bottom of the still. Reagents may be supplied by means of a charging line 34 and inlet shoot 36. Appropriate indicator gauges are used to give the temperature-pressure conditions. The preparation of butyl lithium from metallic lithium and butyl bromide is also described.
